The world is full of exciting places and treasures. Look around and find that special “something” that inspires you and bring it into your home. A photograph, an old wooden window or a book. I find something beautiful in every place I visit. I love traveling because it exposes me to so many unique and different experiences. How can someone NOT be inspired when traveling through Europe or watching a gorgeous sunset, driving through upstate New York in the fall or sailing the vast blue sea? Now, you can’t bring all of these things into your home, but you sure can be inspired to capture your experience(s) and keep your beautiful memories close to home.  I say, get out and travel…see the world!

Ireland Trip- Unbelievably lush and beautiful. Here an old red barn door was the perfect backdrop to snap a photo I'll treasure, forever. It also reminds me of the red barn armoire my father built for our son's nursery.

The distressed red barn door in Ireland inspired me to have one made for my son's nursery.

Venice, Italy! What can I say expect AMAZING! The fact you can look around and see buildings that are more than 500 years old AND still standing is incredible. Italy brings out the artist in everyone.

Paris, France. If you really want to see dramatic and stylish buildings on every single block, take a trip to Paris. The city is incredibly beautiful by day and by night. You walk away from structures and ask, "how did they do that?"

This is what I'm talking about. Unique, wonderfully different than the surroundings I'm use to…but I could sure get use to this scenery.

I get several calls a month asking me to stage a property. There are a few options to do this. The most effective way I have found to stage a property is to do it up “RIGHT”. Selecting the right pieces of furniture to place in the most advantageous areas of the home is the best bang for your buck. I will purchase the furnishings and accessories, place them in the home and have the real estate agent negotiate the pieces into the price of the home. Setting a mood, creating a style and leaving a lasting impression are the key to a successful stage.

Project #3

For most designers, the “unveiling” of a newly remodeled or decorated home is the highlight of the project. But personally, it’s a toss up between the thrill of working a zillion hours a day to meet a tight deadline and seeing your clients reaction when they see the house for the first time. It’s exhilarating, nerve wrecking and worth every penny.

I am a firm believer in answering my phone and responding to people immediately. Thank goodness I practice what I preach. My phone rang in a noisy restaurant but I excused myself to take the “blocked” call. The voice on the other line was an unfamiliar british accent. The client was referred to me by a local real estate agent. The client(s) lived in London and they were looking to remodel and furnish a home in Lake Las Vegas, Nevada as their holiday home. The client hates the color brown and wanted to transform this home into her black & white contemporary holiday house…in a couple of weeks.

Little did I know the home was a traditional “brown” home (floor to ceiling). No worries, I love a challenge. I got straight to work and thank goodness for late night emails, texts and chats.  The final product was brilliant.  The clients love their new home and are able to enjoy the Las Vegas sunshine.  Here’s what the house looked like BEFORE I got my hands on it…

I have my dad to thank for my love of design.  From forging iron to  building his first home in Argentina (single handedly at age 15!) to garmet cutter and production manager for a woman’s apparel designer in the United States…my dad can do it all!!

My dad is a great man.  My brother-in-law Joe says “we are blessed to have fathers that are towering good and noble men”.  That’s the truth!!!

It all started with this work of art. My dad was 11 years old when he painted this beautiful piece I proudly display on my family room mantel.

Over the years, my father has created some unbelievable art pieces with a story behind each one. Whether carving on wood, restoring an old window to its former beauty, crafting in ceramics or painting on canvas, my dad has left his mark…on my heart. The photos are a few of the many different artworks I treasure and inspire me.

Black and Bold

Black and Beautiful

Black and Beautiful

Black doors are always an unexpected addition to a home. Sure, you could keep your standard white door for the interior of your home, but why not step out of the box?
6 reasons why a BLACK door is BOLD and BEAUTIFUL
1. A Black door makes a ceiling look taller
2. A Black door is classy
3. A Black door is timeless
4. A Black door makes any stock door look special
5. A Black door marks a destination
6. A Black door makes little “fingerprints” disappear

The 1920′s (built to last)

Houses built in the 1920′s were built to last. Craftsmanship at its finest. Niches, Spanish tile roof tops, breezeways and character…lots of character. In a Spanish/Mediterranean Style home, the beauty is in the details. Hardwood floors, wooden beams, Spanish tile staircases, grand fireplaces and little surprises throughout the house make this one of my favorite style homes to remodel and or decorate.

One of my favorite homes to visit in Malibu, California. Spectacular Malibu tiles!

NEW CONSTRUCTION (live and learn)

Remember, the memories you make while living IN a house makes it a HOME!

Remember, the memories you make while living IN a house makes it a HOME!

You know the saying, live and learn?  Who came up with that saying anyway?  They were right!  Boy, after going through a new custom home build (for my family), I sure did learn ALOT!!!! I have to say, it is so much easier building a home for others.  I don’t second guess myself when I am faced with making a decision on plumbing fixtures, or furnishings or what hardware would look best when it comes to “doing” for others. It’s not so easy when you are decorating your own home, by yourself.  You need to be able to bounce your ideas off someone.  Live and learn!

Anyone that knows me knows I like to “change” things around my house- often!  I’ve been known to change my furniture around. I like “tweaking” things just enough to make me feel like I have something new.  Isn’t that a great feeling?

Because I am fortunate enough to be surrounded by so many beautiful things, exposed to so many creative ideas, colors and styles, I think my next house will be…  WHITE, all WHITE!  I love white, always have.  Yes, I know it isn’t practical to have an all white house when you have teenagers, but why not?  If you like it, try it.  Slipcovered sofas are the key!   An all white kitchen, white sofas and a touch of blue throughout.  Ahh, paradise! Not sure if my husband will go for it, but I think he’s just tired of hearing about it by now so he may just cave and say, yes.  As long as it has a wrap around porch and it’s by water, Pat will love it! Yes, our next home will be our DREAM home, porch and all.

So, I got off track a bit, but wanted to share what I have learned from building our own home.

Sometimes you have to compromise. Restrictions in our HOA prevented us from having a Spanish Colonial off white house, so we selected this color for the exterior.

Keeping an eye on the workers' progress to meet our timeline is a must for any build. Even if it means climbing onto the roof yourself to do it. I did!

Sentimental items are important in a home. My grandfather hand carved this mirror. Originally, it was a frame that housed their wedding photo from Argentina. My parents gave us the frame and we had it made into a mirror for the powder room.

Ah, the laundry room. The room any mom spends the most time in. Gosh do I miss this great big laundry room. Ample storage, plenty of work space and a view, not bad. The best thing about it was I had it located upstairs on same floor as the bedrooms. No lugging dirty laundry down the stairs. Yes!
